Abstract

Service life of steel wire ropes is limited due to change of properties during exploitation under working condition and loads. Regular inspection during operation enables damage development inspection and provides a regular rope ageing process. In this way timely replacement of ropes and safe service is assured. Basic types of steel rope damages (mechanical wear, fatigue, corossion, failure due to overload and shearing collapse) are presented in the article and analysed. Collecting data can be contribute to better design of lifting equipment and ropes and improved maintenance procedures.
