Abstract

With the development of construction engineering, design and construction of buildings under the leadership of the top experts of the IMS Institute, during the existence of Yugoslavia, the awareness of the need to introduce geotechnical engineering within the Institute was also developed. Given that, in the design phase, there were problems that needed to be answered in terms of building foundations, the need to introduce geotechnical engineering as a separate centre in IMS Institute arose over time. In this sense, in parallel with the development and implementation of geotechnical engineering, new experiences were created in this multidisciplinary complex field that connects civil engineering and geology. Viewed chronologically, geotechnical engineering at IMS Institute can be divided into three time periods: 1948-2000 was the period of development, implementation and design of construction and geotechnical structures, present is 2000-2023 as the period of introduction of multidisciplinary modern methods of testing soil and geotechnical structures, taking into account software-hardware engineering, and future from 2023 as the period of significant application of IT technologies and systems in solving geotechnical problems.

Keywords: geotechnical engineering, laboratory testing, in-situ testing, design of geo-structures
