Abstract

Structural performance diagnostics is fundamental for structural reparation and reconstruction. It includes analysis of state, behaviour and structural deterioration, and also residual strength assessment, life estimation, working regime, and the scope of revitalization. State analysis, diagnostics of structural strength and deterioration assumes computer assisted numerical calculation by finite element method or by classic approach and experimental measurement. Discovering and solving the problem causes is treated with structural performance diagnostics.

This approach enables determination of real structural behaviour, reliable forecasting of structural response in service, determination of choice and decisions parameters and the cause of poor behaviour or structural deterioration, and also the assessment of service life and the time of reliable service of construction.

Problems in service develop mostly from improper design and geometry. Additionally, they are frequently caused by insufficient material resistance to crack initiation and propagation, particularly in welded joints. Also, in the usual case both described factors are involved. In the engineering analysis of supporting structures, the application of these methods is unavoidable and is justified due to very low expenses with a very high level of results.
