Abstract

A general approach to evaluation of residual strength and life of structures has been presented by using fracture mechanics parameters. Damage initiation and growth mechanisms due to fatigue, creep and corrosion has been analysed in particular. To illustrate the presented procedure, steam collector and jet engine disks have been given as examples. Pressure vessels and welded joints have been also analysed as typical structures whose integrity should be assessed.

Keywords: residual strength and life, retairment-for-cause, leak-before-break, damage tolerance concept, safe life concept, replicas
